In our bhAratIya cultural tradition, dakshiNA is offered to the anchors of a space as a measure of valuing the knowledge (and Grace) received. I consider the dakshiNA I offer as an indication of the value and commitment I hold for a given space. It is an instrument of my self responsibility. It is not a fee being paid for availing some services; nor is it a donation being paid out of generosity; nor is it a mere token amount.
While the rnam ऋणम् (loosely translated as liability) of the receiver of knowledge (and Grace) doesn’t get nullified by the offering of dakshiNA (for the rnam ऋणम् is a lot subtle, and can only be felt by the concerned), dakshiNA is offered as a gross form reciprocity. I ought to offer my dakshiNA in a manner and quantum that is indicative of my valuing of that space and relationship, and offered such that it invites the other to continue to invest in me. The offering of the dakshiNA is really for oneself to deepen the commitment to the process.
One may decide on what “dakshiNA” one wants to offer, considering how one values the given space as also one’s specific economic context. The following pointers will be helpful in your offering of the dakshiNA.
– Offer the dakshiNA at the beginning of the event. If you are offering dakshiNA for an ongoing learning activity, do offer the same at the beginning of every calendar month (whichever calendar you follow). Please note dakshiNA is an instrument for one’s commitment.
– Though online has become the mode today, mere transferring to bank account doesn’t qualify for dakshiNA. It gets its value when it is offered with the bhAva. Sending a screenshot of the transfer with a connected message is one such practice of expression of the bhAva.
– Review the appropriateness of the dakshiNA offered periodically, in conjunction with other aspects of your cost of living.
– Paying attention to this process is indicative of how one values the practice and journey.
