shILam (शीलम्) – benevolence towards others

Following are couple of shLOka from the mahAbhArathA, taken from Chathurvedi Badrinath’s “The Mahabharata – An inquiry in the human context”

(Freedom from malice towards any being, in act, thought, and speech; benevolence towards all; be sharing – this is sILa.)

dharma, truth, good conduct, strength and I (srI – all that which is desirable in human life) – all of us are rooted in shILa. Of that, there is no doubt.
{this slokA is through the voice of srI, and thus is the use of ‘I’ and ‘us’}

The first slokA defines shILa, which is said as foundational even to dharma (धर्म), which I am able to relate to quite much.

In human beings, it is sILa that has the chief place. If that is lost, a person’s life, wealth, and friends, all are meaningless.
