One should examine and secure the friendship of those who can speak so as to make one weep over a crime (before its commission) or rebuke severely (after the act) and are able to teach (the ways of) the world.

My reflection on this Thirukkural:
The strength of my friendship with the other is indicated by my ability to receive the expressions of judgements and anger of the other on my actions, without I getting reactive to these expressions; and in my capacity to understand the concern the other holds for me and the world at large, beyond the visible behavior of the other.
