In this yagnyashALA, we are practising to listen to the different aspects of ourselves – to our body (Asana), to our breath (prANAyAmA), and to our inner instruments (svAdhyAya). These are essentially individual self practices, but regularly engaging with these practices in a cohort group also help inspire one’s self and others in the group.

Everyone in the group builds and nurtures this group space. Following pointers can help in how you can hold the sacrosanctity of this space for you and everyone in the group.

    — Pl log in 5 minutes before the start time, and ensure that the tech aspects (audio, video positioning etc) are set, so that we can start the sessions on time. Anyone joining late disturbs the group energy.

    – It is useful to have a dedicated screen (one screen per person), barring few exceptions

    – A high resolution camera helps.

    – Keep your audio muted except when you are speaking

    – Keep your video On, all the time

    – Please join from your laptop/ desktop, and but for exceptional situations avoid joining in through your mobile phone.

    – Pl join in from a space that is calm and without any disturbance, and allows you to be fully present to the process

    – Please avoid eating food or snacks, and drinking beverages during the session.

    – For Asana-prANAyAma sessions, ensure that you have a gap of at least 2.5 to 3 hours after your last meal.

    – If in doubt, engage; pl don’t assume. This commitment will always show the way to deal with set-backs on the way.

    – The essence of the practice here is to explore beyond what I know, and venture in to the spaces of what I don’t know. So, while we may learn some Asana and Pranayama methods, and on some frames for self reflections (like judge, victim etc), the real learning is deepening my capacity to observe myself… This requires deep commitment to the practice and being steadfast in that despite moments I may feel uncomfortable during the journey. This is a long journey, and is not about short term ‘goals’ (quarterly targets).

    – In case you have any constraints, difficulties, challenges (health set backs, schedule clashes etc) for any of the sessions, please “consult”; avoid sending mere information.

    – Please Note, To do something when it is possible, is no big deal. To do, with all challenges around, is the real sAdhanA. It tells us about our commitment levels and belonging to the space we are involved.

    – When you are really committing to this practice, you aren’t committing just to your personal practice, but you are committing to the group… which is a good way of ensuring your own persistence.

    – Each of us are responsible for everyone in the group – Our presence, absence impacts the group energy. Thus, engaging with the group on one’s constraints would help one to explore possibilities and help everyone to learn from each other.

    – While unforeseen is understandable, we don’t plan for the unforeseen. So, a key Question to ask oneself is “What commitment am I making to myself for the practice and to the group?”

    – Committing to regular personal practice of both Asana-prANAyAma and svAdhyAya is essential; Group Practice does not and cannot replace my personal practice.

    – Regularity and Sincerity are the hallmarks of abhyAsa.

    – It is very useful to have one Learning Journal as a companion as you embark on this journey. Your reflections and observations of yourself noted regularly in this journal is the real learning (as against the frameworks, concepts, labels (e.g. names of Asanas) etc).

    – If you don’t have an Asana mat, please DON’T buy one. It is important to explore ecologically sensitive ways. The first principle of ecological sustenance is Avoid/ Eliminate extra material usage as much as possible.
